A whiter shade of pale

ENGINEERING - The story of trying to develop a toner cartridge that prints in white (yes, white)

The problem

There are no white print cartridges available to the average consumer that actually work – that is to say, give us all the ability to print white on top of a dark colour or non-white media. It’s been tried before but the colour turns out too dark and can’t really be called white at all.

The solution

After many prototypes, versions and user testing this company has developed toner cartridges that can be used to print very light colours on top of dark. They’ve also developed a clear toner cartridge that can be used to print security markings or codes that would be invisible under normal lighting conditions, but readable under certain lighting such as UV wavelengths.
