ENGINEERING - The story of improving efficiency on assembly lines
Companies that make engines have long been focussing on how to maximise their profits in an industry which is renowned for tight margins. When year-on-year supply chain costs have been driven down, the key efficiencies have to be found not just in reducing assembly time but pressure testing time too.
The sector is also trying to improve the quality of their products in order to reduce warranty claims through the reduction of defects incurred during assembly.
This advanced engineering design team has developed an end-to-end process that allows picking, orientating, core plug installation, testing and numbering. This was achieved through extensive design and prototyping including building a bespoke machine with a measurement system and a series of guides, to ensure the core plugs are inserted to the required depth.
