We’re pleased to see regions pushed to the foreground as Leeds hosts a major innovation event.
Innovative start-ups are on the rise in the UK, with over 11,800 launching in 2018. But London still boasts the lion’s share of new companies: 4,752 new firms registered last year, compared to 1,398 in the south east, the capital’s next biggest rival.
So, as champions of innovation everywhere, we were delighted to hear that Leeds and the City Region is going to be playing host to a prestigious international programme in partnership with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
With a list of inspiring alumni as long as your arm, this acclaimed US university knows a thing or two about encouraging the talent and technology of tomorrow. Leeds will follow in the footsteps of Beijing, Tokyo and Qatar, having successfully bid for a place on the two-year MIT Regional Entrepreneurship Programme last year.
More than 100 leading figures from government, business, universities and finance, along with entrepreneurs from around the globe, will be heading to Leeds next January to explore the area’s strengths and ambitions.
The MIT programme provides “expert, evidence-based guidance to support regions to accelerate economic growth, job creation and social change”. Here at Breakthrough Group, we know just how much incredible talent and how many bright ideas can be found well outside the M25, so we’re excited to see what emerges from the programme.
Professor Lisa Roberts, deputy vice-chancellor at the University of Leeds, said: “MIT identified this region as having significant strengths to support the UK economy. We know that we can collectively create a truly remarkable environment and find new ways to support innovation, enterprise and inclusive growth. This is a chance for Leeds and the City Region to share our ideas and shine on an international stage.”
Hear hear! If you’re making a big impact outside London and the south east, we’d love to hear your story and see how we can help to support your growth.
