When you just can't find a way to get through
How an incredible new idea has put innovation on the world map.
If you’ve ever had a parcel go missing in the post, you’ll understand how aggravating it is when the long-established address system falls down.
So, imagine what it’s like to live in a place where there is no official addressing system at all. It is estimated that around 75% of the world doesn’t have a consistent or adequate way to identify the locations of homes or businesses, which has a tremendous impact on about four billion people.
From being unable to receive deliveries to being prevented from reporting crimes, people who can’t communicate where they live are losing many of their rights as citizens. This is also a dangerous problem for remote areas if, for example, a broken water facility can’t be found, let alone fixed.
Could there be a way to create a new, simple, offline system that could precisely describe any location in the world, in all the major languages?
This was the challenge that a creative UK team set themselves when they determined to bring better addressing to both developed and developing countries. It was an enormously complex task: they had to write a revolutionary algorithm that could specify a location, to within an incredibly small area, anywhere in the world. The system couldn’t be complicated to use; it had to work outside their own app; it had to be useable by someone with no data connection and it had to be 100% accurate, both online and offline.
The company now has working prototypes that are being commercially used. This is just the sort of innovative thinking that changes lives, so we were delighted to help them to claim R&D tax credits for their outstanding work on this highly complex project.
