The game of geeks

It's here. The first ever UK Beer Pong Championship and it's sponsored by Breakthrough Funding.

MAN HAS BEEN DRINKING BEER FOR AT LEAST 5,000 YEARS. PROBABLY MORE. Brits have a special affinity with the stuff, and yet we still don't have a national beer pong tournament even though it's the game of geeks and we have the best geeks in the world.

They have national tournaments in America, Australia (naturally), Switzerland and even Belarus. No more. The First Official Brit Pong Championship is here and you could enter your own team to win £5,000 and a trip to Las Vegas for the World Series of Beer Pong as the UK Champions.

In case you don't know, beer pong (sometimes known as Beirut) is a drinking game in which players throw a ping pong ball across a table, with the aim of landing the ball in a cup of beer. The official British version has two players with 10 cups set up in a triangle formulation at each end of the table.

Other versions can have 1 to 4 players and 6 cups. Each team takes a turn attempting to shoot a ping pong ball into the opponent's cups which have a small amount of beer in the bottom. This keeps the cups stable when the ball hits it but fails to land inside. If a ball lands in a cup (known as a 'make'), the other team consumes the contents and the cup is removed from the table. The first team to eliminate all of the opponent's cups is the winner.

There has never really been any agreed rules for BritPong, but now there is an official set of rules for the UK championships. If you want to settle arguments over distraction techniques, miracle shots, the jerk rule, scoring, premature grabulation or the gut exception, you can get the official rule book from Amazon here

Breakthrough Funding is proud to be the headline sponsor of the UK Beer Pong Championships and a new video to explain the rules and everything beer pong will be out next week on YouTube. The picture shows the actors ready for the first day's filming and we can't wait to see it when it's finished.

If you want to learn more about the game of geeks visit the britpong website, and if you really fancy your chances enter your team on Eventbrite here

Good luck!
