ENGINEERING - The story of maintaining structural integrity when making a big hole in a sea wall
What do you do when you need to get a car through a sea wall? Create an access big enough to drive through! Except it’s not as easy as that, when you take into consideration that this wall (and therefore the access) not only has to continue acting as a barrier to the sea, but also play host to the many pedestrians walking across the top of it.
Some nifty engineers did a lot of research and managed to design, model and test an access that can be secured either closed or open, handles water surge like a pro, safely guides pedestrians across its walkway and even allows for users with disabilities.
